This blog post is born out of, what I consider a very creepy Facebook pop-up post on my wall. I had been looking at a product on line (not through Facebook) and there it was....an ad for exactly what I had just been looking at online. Maybe this doesn't creep you out ~but it did me and made me start thinking about how exposed we are.
In this hurried world, it seems time is the only thing we can not control. It ticks ahead, no matter how fast we try to get three things done at once or not. I am old enough to have had a childhood with out internet, cell phones, email, texting, cyber bullies, and all the feelings of constantly being media mined for needing and acquiring more stuff. I do feel grateful for the simple fact of being born when I was.
I used to be able to feel alone, not so much these days. It's important that we all have the option to be alone. No, truly alone (where you know, no one is watching you, listening to you or even knows where you are- a true off grid time for your soul to decompress). No expectations, no schedules, a brief time where you can float or sit or sing or do what ever makes you feel the best.
The information era, that came in with a bounding internet, promised us more freedom of time. An automated life that would set us free! Sadly, I don't think we are achieving this goal, by any means. I have read, that many of today's 4 year olds are becoming anxious and are walking alone, right next to a mother and father that are so busy looking at their mobile devices that young hands are no longer being held. Bedtime stories are being told by robotic voices, run by batteries and child sized mobile devices ~ No longer is bedtime a warm cozy snuggle under a parent's arm, talking and reading a well loved book. I know there are so many reasons why a parent could justify doing this. Please, people, stop and think about the love you pour into your child with each glance, each verbal exchange, each squeeze of the hand. This is a serious situation that our society will have to cope wlith, with the cold emotional generation to come, embedded with a new set of downloaded psychological turmoils.
So, with all that said, I am giving myself permission, I'm taking time for myself. You should take time for yourself. Break free from all the techie demands in your life. Try it for an hour, then a day, get brave and feel time slip away....it's amazing how much time slows down when you do nothing.
